Wingu Kenda, Cloud Nine in Swahili, is a nine-bedroom house in the wild country around Nanyuki, inside a private wildlife conservancy with Mount Kenya above it. It takes up to eighteen guests, is booked as a whole house for one group at a time, and comes with a chef, housekeeping and a driver who knows the conservancy roads.
Stone, timber and a columned verandah onto the lawns. The living room has vaulted timber ceilings, a stone fireplace and deep sofas; the dining room has a long table under the beams. The nine bedrooms have four-posters and fireplaces, and each opens onto the garden. Outside there is a swimming pool, a court marked for tennis and pickleball, a putting green on the front lawn and open fireplaces for the evenings. See Wingu Kenda.
The house stands inside a private wildlife conservancy, so wildlife moves past the verandah and game drives start at the front door, morning and evening. A driver who knows the conservancy roads and the town comes with the house.
A personal chef cooks in the house kitchen, with long lunches under the trees and fireside dinners. Housekeeping is daily. What is included at a full-service home.
The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, with its golf course and lunch on the lawn facing the mountain, is five minutes away. The Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy's animal orphanage is next door. Nanyuki town and the equator marker are about twenty minutes, the Sirimon route up Mount Kenya twenty-five minutes, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, with its rhino sanctuary and chimpanzee reserve, about an hour and a quarter west.
Wingu Kenda was once the Kenyan home of the actor Sir John Hurt, who gave it the name Cloud Nine. Today it is one of the family's homes.
